The first land plants were short and had to grow near water because they couldn’t control water flow in and out of their tissues. Over time, some plants developed the ability to regulate this water flow, allowing them to grow taller and thrive in places where water is scarce. In my PhD, I study how plants evolved different mechanisms to control water movement through their cells and tissues, which allowed for plants to diversify into the forms we see today.
