With the southern polar region facing a host of environmental and political challenges, one thing is certain – Antarctica needs friends. As a polar social scientist, Dr Katie Marx has made it her mission to understand and strengthen people’s relationship with Antarctica, especially in gateway cities like Hobart. Katie has spent several seasons working as a guide on the Antarctic peninsula and her current research focuses on public engagement and polar tourism. She’s also a bit of an ice swimming tragic, with aspirations to one day swim an “ice mile” in the far south. Most of all, Katie wants to know what makes Antarctica special to you, so come down and let her know!
