Phytoplankton are tiny organisms in the ocean that play a huge role in regulating our climate. Phytoplankton absorb as much CO2 as land plants and produce about half the oxygen in the atmosphere! But, in the Southern Ocean there aren’t enough of some nutrients (like iron) to fully support the growth of phytoplankton.
