Valentina Nunez Espinosa

I’m a PhD candidate at the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). Using computer simulations, I track tiny marine larvae as they drift through ocean currents to understand how marine populations stay connected. My research focuses on how marine heatwaves may affect the survival and spread of the long-spined sea urchin, a species transforming kelp ecosystems along Australia’s east coast and Tasmania. By combining oceanography, ecology, and biological data, I investigate how climate change may reshape marine ecosystems and how we can better support their management in the future.
