Minerals and rocks seem to be permanent and unchanging, but this is not the case. Minerals are changing all the time, and human activities can make minerals dissolve faster. My work is on the behaviour of rare elements in the environment, after they are dissolved out of their parent minerals. How do they behave? And why does this matter? The answer to the first question is often ‘we don’t know the specifics’ and it matters because many of these elements are important for the green energy transition!
