I investigate viruses and diseases in Antarctic seals. As a PhD candidate at IMAS–UTAS, I spend part of my time in Antarctica collecting fresh seal poo (a surprisingly valuable scientific resource) and the rest in the lab extracting viral DNA and RNA, sequencing it, and using bioinformatics to identify the viruses hiding inside. By combining virology with ecology, I aim to better understand how viruses move through seal populations, predict future disease outbreaks, and help conserve our very precious pinniped pals.
