I’m a physicist working on pitch-side concussion diagnosis in sport. With concern growing around the long-term risks posed to athletes who continue competing with a concussion, reliable pitch-side diagnosis is more important than ever. Measuring such weak fields as the ones emitted from the brain requires more than just a regular sensor. My work centres around designing extremely precise magnetic field sensors using quantum technology. By building them into a helmet-like device that can be brought to sports pitches around the country, I hope to help establish a new method of checking for concussion that can make sport safer for everyone.
