My wide-ranging, somewhat fragmented, career has been great fun as detailed in a non-specialist way in my 2024 book “A Piece of the Action – STEM++ adventures below, on, above and beyond planet Earth”. I have lived and worked in the UK, Australia, and the USA. Sounding rockets, high-altitude balloons and satellites carried out high energy astrophysics observations (Leicester University, UTAS, & NASA). Additionally, extensive ground-based telescope observations were made in the near-IR and optical wavebands. Short periods were spent in physical oceanography (CSIRO) and local Tasmanian industry. Most recently, I have spent over 20 years working as an Antarctic glaciologist (UTAS, ACE-CRC, and AAD).
