I am a scientist studying how music, people, and technology come together to create new sounds and build communities. I am passionate about people dancing and a specialist in cumbia, a popular style of music and dance from Latin America for which I have travelled to places like Colombia, Mexico, and Argentina to learn how DJs and musicians manipulate turntables, speakers, computers, and other technology in creative ways. I am especially interested in embodied technology—how our bodies, technology and music work together when we dance, perform, listen, and engineer. As both a researcher and an international DJ, I show how people invent exciting new music by mixing old traditions with new technology, helping cultures grow and connect across the world.
