Getting a drug exactly where it needs to go in the body is difficult – there are all sorts of biological obstacles to overcome. But what if we could use those barriers to our advantage? I work on smart nanomaterials designed to sense and react to their surroundings. I’m developing polymeric nanoparticles – tiny capsules for carrying drugs – engineered to detect specific environmental conditions and release their cargo when and where it’s needed. I’m currently working on stimuli-responsive particles for targeting bacterial biofilms associated with chronic wounds.
