I have been a geologist for more than fifty years and a researcher and teacher at the University of Tasmania for a lot of this time. I mainly ‘time travelled’ to the middle part of Earth’s history to learn about supergiant ore deposits of base metals that formed in sedimentary basins at this time. Serendipitously, the ore deposits told a tale of anoxic ancient oceans and had implications for the evolution of complexity in early eukaryotes living in these oceans. I was ably assisted by many other time travellers (geologist colleagues and friends from many nations) along the way. I am grateful to the minerals industry and the Australian taxpayer for supporting this research – it’s been an exciting 50 years!
