My image illustrates a scientist’s caring hands checking the health of Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) pouch young. Devils can raise up to four pouch young at a time.
Photographed while volunteering on the West Coast during a six-year project documenting the life of Tasmanian devils. The researchers trap devils in numerous locations in Tasmania to survey the population and monitor the spread of the fatal Devil Facial Tumour Disease. Devils are given a complete health check which includes hair, faeces, blood samples and a biopsy is taken if any suspicious growths are observed.

This highly-respected prize invites amateur and professional photographers to showcase the wonders of our extraordinary part of the world — which is teeming with science and scientists. Finalist images are displayed at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery during Beaker Street Festival each August, with great prizes on offer for Judges’ and People’s Choice winners.
The Beaker Street Science Photography Prize is sponsored by Pennicott Foundation — thank you crew! It would not be possible without the support of Full Gamut, Tasmania’s premier fine art printers, as well as the wonderful Tasmanian businesses who donate prizes.
