The Feet
Kimberley Kliska
The feet is an intimate portrait of the reptilian feet of male Emperor penguin, the key to their breeding success. The male Emperor balances and incubates the egg on their feet for 75 days throughout the harsh Antarctic winter, demonstrating in incredible adaptation to breeding in the planet’s most extreme environment.
During this time the male penguins huddle together and rotate positions while moving slowly to stay warm. They never leave the colony and fast for four months. An amazing commitment to being parents, these behaviours ensure the survival of the egg, balanced carefully on their feet.
