Join us at Beaker Street Festival, a week-long celebration of science and art in lutruwita/Tasmania – an island where both are abundant.

In 2024, Beaker Street Festival will have a focal weekend of events from August 9 to 11. The immersive program will be centred in southern Tasmania, with a Festival precinct spanning out from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart.

Delve into today’s hottest topics with a program of events, entertainment, exhibitions, and excursions, while experiencing the best of Tasmanian environments and culture.

Bored of basic pub chat? Share a drink with Australia’s most impressive minds. Keen to get in touch with nature? Experience natural wonders with the experts who know them best. Want to try something genuinely new? Be the first to discover world-changing breakthroughs.

Whether you’re a curious mind, an insatiable foodie (or drink-ie?), or are simply seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, our festival promises a mix of wonder, flavour, and scientifically-proven fun. Expect a rich and diverse program of science-based installations, scientific talks, artist/scientist collaborations, live music and theatre exploring scientific concepts, scientist-led tours and dinners, and much more.

Nurture your inner nerd! Feed your brain cells! Quench your thirst… for knowledge! Beaker Street offers endless ways to satisfy your curiosity, including free and ticketed events.

Now in its 8th year, Beaker Street Festival is Australia’s premier National Science Week event for adults.

Beaker Street Festival is delivered by Beaker Street, a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity based in Lutruwita/Tasmania which aims to build community through scientific understanding.

See you at Beaker Street Festival in August!

Past Festivals

2023: Psychedelics, Menopause, and Tim Flannery were part of our 2023 Feature Speaker Sessions at Hobart’s Theatre Royal Studio Theatre, with Fungi Expeditions, Bat Tours, and Museum Vaults included in our Field Trips – the best way to experience Tasmania’s hidden secrets and wild places. Seaweed and Vaginas were on the menu at Mona, and our Dark Sky Retreat at Spring Bay Mill was an unforgettable exhale.

2022: Is science really for everyone? In 2022 we took at deep dive into the cultural complexities of science, with discussions from the Tasmanian Aboriginal community, the Deaf community, and a musical exposé expressing the wishes of the dead. We also went north, with events exploring the science of stadiums, sparkling wine, and sauerkraut.
